In 2008 Father Bash responded to the dire lack of health facilities in Uganda by establishing the Divine Mercy Hospital in Mbarara. With the generous support from American Friends of the Father Bash Foundation Benefactors, it addresses the escalating health challenges not only in Mbarara but also in surrounding areas.
Uganda faces a severe scarcity of medical professionals, with a daunting doctor-to-patient ratio of 1:24,725 and a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:11,000, far below the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended 1:1000 ratio. While not meeting the standards of medical facilities in the United States, the Divine Mercy Hospital is the best available in Uganda. The hospital's vision is to be the preferred healthcare provider, enhancing the well-being of the people and their communities.
At present, the Divine Mercy Hospital offers a range of medical services, including general consultations, maternal and newborn care, laboratory services, radiology, surgery, and inpatient care. Specialist consultations are available when necessary.
Nevertheless, the Divine Mercy Hospital still requires assistance: 1. Infrastructure Upgrades: The hospital needs to expand its facilities to accommodate the increasing demand for medical services. It recently introduced the only ultrasound system in Mbarara to improve maternal health. 2. Ongoing Needs: As the population continues to grow, the hospital consistently requires additional supplies, upgrades, services, and enhanced patient care. 3. Pharmacy: The hospital's pharmacy lacks adequate stocks of medicines and supplies. 4. Dental Section: Establishing a dental section with the necessary supplies and tools is also essential.
