Founded in 2000, this transitional hostel serves as a temporary home and secondary school for higher education for the children in Kakyeka, Mbarara.
Throughout the holidays, the hostel bustles with students, experiencing an active atmosphere. The foundation has provided beddings, connected water and electricity, and recently added a security fence with a gate for the children's safety. A caretaker manages their daily needs, and meals are shared like a family. A counselor regularly visits to provide guidance, serving as a parental figure during their transition to adulthood. The results have been remarkable – the children remain focused, complete their education, and become upstanding members of society.
Despite its basics, the facility needs further attention:
1. Indoor and outdoor game equipment to reduce holiday redundancy. 2. Tutors to teach them computer skills, tailoring, crafts, and carpentry to make their own furniture. 3. A mini library to enhance reading skills. 4. A proper kitchen, as the current one lacks doors, cement flooring, and adequate cooking equipment. 5Lavatories and bathrooms need upgrading, with separate sections for boys and girls. 6. Improved drainage, alternative water sources, and proper storage for communal utensils and supplies are essential.
The facility offers space for expansion, allowing the construction of multi-story dormitories to meet the children's evolving needs. These children represent the nation's future, and providing them with a welcoming, well-equipped shelter is crucial.
